But as the former host of NBC's "Tonight Show" prepares to take up residence in prime time tonight and every weeknight from now on, Time magazine is hailing him (with no great enthusiasm) as the "future of television" and the industry that made him a star is watching to see what happens next.

Because what looks to many as a surrender by the once-proud Peacock, which lately seems strained by the burdens of programming seven nights a week, could turn out to be a coup.

If Leno succeeds - and given how much less his show costs than five nights of scripted drama, the bar's set low - it could be bad news for anyone trying to sell a broadcast network on anything heavier than "Jaywalking."

On the bright side, it could also signal the resurrection of TV comedy (whose death, it might be argued by CBS and NBC, has been too long exaggerated).

I couldn't help noticing that some of this year's best fall pilots aren't about alien invasions or emergency workers or people who've glimpsed the future.

But then, thanks in part to "The Jay Leno Show," there aren't as many new network shows as there would've been a few years ago, (despite a dizzying number from ABC, which is adding five new series on Wednesdays alone).

I'll be weighing in on most - the good, the bad and the ugly - before they hit your screens, but for now, here are some worth checking out.

Why does anyone care about this. Not much on his show is going to be different then it was before. The few new things will fail then they will disappear. The talk show format has been around for a long time and has never worked to well during the prime time line up. At first the show will get ok ratings. Then after the novelty wears off they will go down. The network will pretend that all is right in the 10 pm time slot and spin it that they are winning the demographic that they intended. Of course that will be a bunch of bull. They will be to embarrassed to remove the show and it will stay on for many years. This is the same thing that happen to cbs, with Catie Couric, or what ever her name is. In the mean time they are killing 5 hours a week of time that they could put on some creative show. But they have no vision. Jay sucks and is not very funny.

NBC should be ashamed of the way they pulled the wool over the eyes of Conan for so many years. Sure, Conan, we'll give you the Tonight Show....(five years later) and by the way, we'll just move Leno up.

Could media outlets be more up Leno's backside? THe only reason anyone is even thinking about this show is because you can't open a webpage or read a magazine without Leno being up in your face. The only question I have is why? Was there people jumping off buildings when this guy went off the air? I could not tell you one person who even consider this guy entertainment. It is self induced dreamstate the media/entertainment industry has thrust upon us. They believe he is loved, so therefore he must be loved. Oh and speaking tv, SNL cant get decent ratings on Saturday Night and now they want to go primetime? I give it unti November before the plug is pulled on that.
